Come celebrate Software Freedom Day with the Koedo LUG and Tokyo Linux Users Group! After the meeting, we’ll proceed to Maruyasu Suisan for dinner and drinks.

We will gather in the 9th floor elevator hall of the Shinjuku Bunka Quint Building before proceeding to the meeting room. If you arrive late, message one of the chats or call Ogasawara-san at 090-6169-4703.

You may bring (preferably Linus / FOSS / tech related) items to be auctioned at the meeting to help fund TLUG. Funds are used to purchase event supplies, offer student discounts, etc. Please be prepared to take unsold items back home with you, we cannot leave them at the venue.

This event is open to all Linux users, friends, and first-timers alike. Join us to talk about all things Linux (and non-Linux) over a few cold ones. Even if you’re not a Linux user or LUG member, but want to hang out with Linux people, please join!

Cost

No event or venue fee. Meals at Zest Cantina average ¥3000. Attendees order individually. The bill will be split evenly among attendees at the conclusion.

All Linux lovers, and supporters of open source code and free software, in the Kanto area (or anywhere else) are invited to attend the next Tokyo Linux Users Group meeting. Membership is open to anyone. There are currently no membership dues or entrance fees.

TLUG meetings are traditionally small and unstructured (very casual). Most of the benefit of the meeting comes from chatting with other Linux users and having informal discussions.

Overview

The Tokyo Linux Users Group is a non-profit non-political volunteer organization that seeks to

spread the use of Linux in Japan,
provide quality information on Linux related technology to its membership, and
serve as a gateway between the Japanese Linux community and the rest of the Linux world.

History

June 16, 1994: establishment of a Linux conference on a local ISP by Jim Tittsler. The beginning of TLUG.
September 1994: first physical meeting at Ed Harter’s house. Over large quantities of Mexican food and a couple of beers, the name Tokyo Linux Users Group (TLUG) is decided upon through voting.
September 1994: Craig Oda begins TLUG web site
1994: Nori Nishigaya sets up the first mailing list on his Linux box called Metanoia.
July 9, 1995: Craig moves mailing list to his ISP after Metanoia crashes. Digest is created and both the list and digest are archived for public access. All data is backed up on tape. :-)
1996: Jim Schweizer becomes first official TLUG Webmaster
October 1997: first election of club officers.
March 1998: TLUG gets its own server compliments Pacific High Tech

TLUG technical meetings run on presentations, lightning talks, and demos from members — people like you. You don’t need to be an expert or a polished speaker: our meetings are small and casual, and first-time presenters are very welcome.

What we’re looking for

Presentations (20–40 minutes) — a deeper dive into a topic: Linux, free/open source software, hardware, networking, or anything the community would find interesting.
Lightning talks (~5 minutes) — a quick show-and-tell: a tool you like, a problem you solved, a project you’re hacking on.
Demos — show something running; no slides required.

Talks may be given in English or Japanese.
